| SEEDS CLASH ON DAY FOUR |
|
|
With many seeds surviving the second round, day four will see some of the highest ranked players in the world battle it out for the eight coveted quarter final places. One of the most interesting scraps on paper is the third match up on centre court: Shahar Peer of Isreal, seeded 11, against Serena Williams, the number eight and reigning Australian Open champion. Serena looked a little shaky in her first match and will have to up her game to move forward. Another seed who could be put to the test is Patty Schnyder, number 12 in Rome this year and a former finalist, who is up against giant killer Samantha Stosur (pictured) in the second match on court one. Can Stosur maintain the momentum she secured on Wednesday, when she took out top seed Mauresmo? Also on court one, Russia's on-form Anna Chakvetadze takes on Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova in what would seem an evenly balanced encounter. Other seeds in action include Elena Dementieva and Nadia Petrova (the Russian duo are first up on centre cour), Jelena Jankovic, Dinara Safina and number two Svetlana Kuznetsova, who plays lucky loser Yuliana Fedak under floodlights after 8.30pm. |
